Satellite giant BSkyB is to embrace IPTV and video on-demand next year, with a briefing to analysts yesterday reportedly outlining the broadcaster's plans following its acquisition of internet service provider Easynet.

According to a report by Broadcast magazine, Sky will introduce broadband access packages to its consumers later this year, along with push video on-demand, voice over IP and cheap telephony services by the end of the year.

The following 12 months will see the broadcaster launch its true video on-demand and IPTV services, building on its existing delivery models using broadband (see Sky By Broadband Trial Offers Glimpse Of VOD Plans) and mobile networks (see Sky Signs Vodafone For Mobile TV Service).

Sky acquired Easynet at the end of last year. The internet service provider currently boasts penetration of around 20% of Britain's homes, and is projected to reach 50% by the end of the year. By the end of 2007, Easynet's penetration level is expected to reach 70%.

Competition within the IPTV sector is hotting up. Earlier this month saw Telewest forging ahead with its on-demand and high definition offering (see Telewest Tackles Sky With Increased HD Service), while TV newcomer BT prepares to launch its own service, merging IPTV, video on-demand and VoIP services with its own Freeview receiver (see BT Unveils Next Generation TV Service).

Elsewhere, the BBC has pledged to work with broadcasters, including current IPTV operator Homechoice, on the development of its own on-demand network, providing access to live streams of BBC One and Two, as well as the last seven days of broadcast material (see BBC Faces First Public Value Test For Online Streaming).
