The Broadcaster of the Year award went to Neil Fox, presenter of the Network Chart show. The Network Chart Show is broadcast every Sunday on 63 Independent Radio services across the British Isles. Independent Radio stations and performers were also awarded four golds, six silvers and four bronzes and Peter Baldwin, soon to retire as the Radio Authority's chief executive, received a special award.

Radio 4's Today remained "the most authoritative programme available on British radio. "The BBC won 22 of the 25 categories including Alistair Cooke's gold award for outstanding contribution to radio for Letter From America which recently celebrated 50 years.
