Reviews: Match Of The Day, Sported!

Match Of The Day Front Cover A new Premiership season means another season of Match of the Day on Saturday night. To coincide with the new series BBC Magazines have today launched Match of the Day magazinein an attempt to offer football fans the more intense goings on in football. The weekly magazine is priced at £1.00 and is aimed at 15-34 year olds.

Match of the Day is presented in a non-glossy paper format and is saddle bound. It is divided into 15 sections which include News , Chinwag with Jimmy Hill, One On One, Match of the Week, Letters, Fantasy League, Previews and Look, Listen and Learn. The up-to-date news section gives an in depth analysis of Bruce Rioch’s (former Arsenal manager) sacking. Jimmy Hill’s Chinwag has the “popular” TV punter’s views on the game. The Usual Suspects features fans giving a breakdown on their clubs expectations for the season. Statistics are not forgotten either with Match of the Week giving a total breakdown on the week’s top game (The Charity Shield) which has interesting graphs and player analysis. There are also comments from wily Alan Hansen and people’s favourite Gary Lineker. Another interesting section is Preview which has Gary Lineker, Alan Hansen, Angus Loughran and Alan Green speculating on next week’s matches. Look, Learn and Listen is a round-up of all football related features on television (terrestrial and non-terrestrial) and radio.

Match of the Day is an excellent magazine which complements the programme very well. It offers in-depth analysis from those who know the game and does not promote the club bias often seen in the tabloids and similar magazines. It is written by professionals for more mature followers of football with an excellent blend of trivia and facts.

The ad:ed ratio is 19:81 with only one half page advertisement. There is also a classifieds section for football related advertisements.
