Having taken over sponsorship of the Football League (Nationwide To Sponsor Football League) , Nationwide has launched an Internet site which has all the latest news, information and in-depth analysis of the league.
Sections in the site include Scoreboard, Fixtures, League Table, Soccer Heaven, Football League and Search. Scoreboard has all the latest results and scorers from the leagues matches (Divisions 1 to 3) and the user is able to scroll through results from previous weeks. Fixtures, lists all the games for the coming week and includes kick-off times, venues and details of television coverage. League Tables is an attractive presentation of each teams position in their respective divisions. Alongside each team is a small picture of the teams kit which adds a touch of colour to the design. The light hearted section of the website is Soccer Heaven where fans can interact with the site by entering competitions or commenting on the sites features. The Search section is an index rather than a search engine. Users can click on specific headings to access certain areas.
The site is well designed and attractive to look at. Each page has its own unique layout to suit its content, for example, Scoreboard actually resembles a scoreboard. Also useful is the amount of information that can be obtained as users can click on each team or fixture and get a full run down on events.
The disadvantages with Nationwide’s site is that it has advertising for Nationwide’s services but not for other companies. Perhaps Nationwide should develop this as an incentive for potential banner advertising for football promotions. Also the website needs a conferencing system where fans of the league can converse with each other. Fans of Carling Net who have just seen their teams relegated from the Premiership may expect more from the site as their teams are still included in Carling’s popular site.
