Capital Buys Big AM To Extend Gold Network

Capital Radio has bought Greater Manchester’s Big AM analogue and digital licences from the Wireless Group for £250,000. The licences will be rebranded as Capital Gold, increasing the potential audience of the Capital Gold Network from 15.8m to 18.1m adults.

David Mansfield, chief executive of Capital Radio, said: “The acquisition is the latest development in our strategy to build our national presence in UK radio and strengthen our brands. This deal allows us to build Capital Radio’s presence in the lucrative North West region.”

Although the Q4 2001 RAJAR figures revealed a 1.9% year on year fall in reach for the Capital Gold Network, period on period it saw a 1.6% rise in its listener numbers.

The Wireless Group has transferred the ownership of the Big AM licences to a new company with no other assets or liabilities and it is this company that Capital has acquired.
