BT To Extend Broadband Offering

BT To Extend Broadband Offering

BT is planning to extend its high-speed internet service to reach over two thirds of the UK population by the end of next month.

The company, which reduced the price of its wholesale broadband product in February, is connecting a further 50 UK towns and cities to its high-speed ADSL service as part of an initiative to extend the broadband market.

Chief executive of BT Wholesale, said: “We pledged last month that we would put broadband at the heart of BT moving forward, and today’s announcements show us doing just that. With the growth in demand following our price cuts, these moves make excellent business sense for BT, as well as being great news for Broadband Britain.”

As part of the initiative BT, which recently launched its own broadband ad campaign (see BT Openworld To Promote Broadband Uptake), will work with rival internet service providers to develop co-branded marketing campaigns to promote the uptake of high-speed internet services.

Last week Freeserve accused BT of pursuing an “orchestrated campaign of anti-competitive behaviour” in an attempt to dominate the high-speed internet market. Freeserve has urged Oftel to launch an “urgent” investigation into the company and is accusing BT of exploiting links with its internet arm BT Openworld in an attempt to gain an “unfair” advantage over its competitors (see Freeserve Calls On Oftel To Investigate BT).
