Mirror Group Restructures Advertising Department

Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) is restructuring its advertising department in a move that will see the magazine and newspaper display teams merged and the number of managers reduced from 16 to eight.

MGN’s head of magazines Jane Candish has already left the company as a result of the restructure and Ally Coggan has resigned as head of classified to be replaced by former head of trading Gary Williams.

Mike Allen, formerly head of agency sales at the Daily Mail, has been appointed to the newly created position of sales controller and will oversee the day to day management of the magazine and newspaper teams. A new head of sponsorship position has also been created, whilst the head of operations and head of trading roles will no longer exist.

The reorganisation will also see the inserts team move from the business development unit into main agency sales, reporting to the display advertising director. The ticket team will remain as a dedicated resource and will report to the sales controller.

The restructure, which is understood to have been pushed through by the ad director Neil Hurman and the new display ad director Dominic Carter, is intended to improve the overall efficiency of the MGN sales operation.

According to the monthly ABC results for May, the Daily Mirror, which has been involved in a price war with The Sun (see Daily Mirror Cuts Cover Price), has seen circulation increase by 2.9% year on year to 2,128,755, up from 2,193,228 in May 2001.
