Evening Standard Managing Director Steps Down

Managing director of the Evening Standard, Sally de la Bedoyere, has stepped down after 17 years at Associated Newspapers.

A spokesperson for the Evening Standard said her departure was part of a management restructure designed to compliment the paper’s ongoing redesign. She added: “Sally has worked for us since 1986 and we’d like to thank her for her contribution to the success of Associated Newspapers.”

De la Bedoyere will be replaced by Mike Anderson, managing director of Associated Newspapers’ free daily title, the Metro. Anderson will take up the position with immediate effect, but will retain responsibility for the continued development of Metro. His deputy, Steve Auckland, will take over the day-to-day running of the paper.

Commenting on Anderson’s appointment, a spokesperson said: “Mike has done an excellent job at the Metro and will continue his good work selling advertising and brand building at the Evening Standard.

According to ABC results for the six months ending in July 2002, the Evening Standard has seen circulation decline by 2.8% year on year to 415,470, down from 427,568 in the same period the previous year. However, analysis of the paper’s circulation over a five-year period paints a slightly bleaker picture (see below), with circulation declining intermittently since 1997.

Reports suggest that Associated Newspapers have given Wadley, who is currently overseeing a redesign of the paper, until Christmas to turn the title around. It is also understood that the paper has recently made a number of new appointments to strengthen its offering.
