More Brits Switching To Broadband

The number of internet connections in the UK increased by 16.5% from July 2001 to July 2002, according to the latest survey of ISPs from the Office Of National Statistics.

The study also revealed that the proportion of web users with permanent connections continues to rise as broadband technology becomes more accessible and ad campaigns hit home. BT, NTL and Telewest have all been at the forefront of corporate efforts to encourage take-up of high-speed internet services at the expense of dial-up systems.

Broadband connections accounted for 6.5% of total internet connections in the UK in July 2002, up from 5.9% in June. However, a recent report from Nielsen//NetRatings suggests that there is ground to be made up on other European countries. In Germany, almost 40% of all households use a high-speed system to connect to the internet.
