Emap Loses Fight For Red

After lengthy negotiations Emap has confirmed that Hachette Filipacchi will maintain control of glossy women’s monthly magazine, Red.

Insiders have suggested that the Emap was keen to maintain control of Red, and had increased its offer to Hachette several times in an attempt to prevent the magazine from changing hands.

The future of Red has hung in the balance since Hachette ended its joint ventures with Emap following its acquisition of Attic Futura (see Hachette Buys Attic Futura For £40 Million). The split saw Hachette take control of the heavyweight Elle titles.

Emap has responded to the break-up with the launch of new celebrity magazine Closer, which is hoping to follow the success of Heat. Last week Julie Harris, deputy managing director and group publishing director of the Elle and Top Sante titles, left Emap to join Hachette as general manager of the women’s magazine group (see Handbags At Dawn For Emap And Hachette).

The latest ABC figures for January to June 2002 show that Red‘s circulation increased by 7.7% year on year to 186,023, up from 172,793 in the same period in 2001.
