CosmoGIRL! Relaunches With New Handbag Size

NatMags’ fledgling teen title, CosmoGIRL!, is relaunching with a series of new editorial features and the handbag-sized format made popular by Condé Nast’s Glamour.

The newly re-sized teen title will debut this May, with a free covermounted black or khaki bag for each reader. The move, instigated by publishing director Jan Adcock and editor Ceilia Duncan, is part of a product development strategy, which includes extra editorial investment and additional retail and consumer promotion at the newsstand.

According to NatMags, the decision to change the magazine’s size follows six months of market research. It also meets parent company, the Hearst Corporation’s, strategic objectives for the brand’s format internationally.

Publishing director, Jane Adcock, commented: “The teen market is very dynamic and it is important to make sure you are constantly re-evaluating your product to ensure it evolves with its readers. This is one of the most competitive sectors in the market and we are confident we will set yet another new standard and ensure CosmoGIRL! remains at the forefront of the teen market.”

The decision to switch to the popular handbag-sized format follows a similar move from Emap’s teenage title, Bliss at the beginning of the year and confirms the growing popularity of the A5 size. (see Bliss To Relaunch With A5 Format)

The latest ABC figures for the July to December 2002 period confirm the competitive nature of the teenage magazine market, with CosmoGIRL seeing its circulation decrease by 18.9% period on period to 142,073, down from 175,237 in the previous January to June 2002 period.

Earlier this week, Hachette Filipacchi’s rival Sugar magazine launched a new bound-in supplement called Celeb Central, in an attempt to capitalise on continuing obsession with celebrity gossip and stem declining circulations (see Sugar Extends Offering With Celebrity Supplement).
