BBC Magazines Dares To Be Different With New Teen Title

BBC Magazines has announced that its new teenage title due to launch later this autumn will be called Dare.

The magazine, previously known as Project April, will appear on the news-stands on 22 October and will be published fortnightly with a coverprice of £1.60. It will target ten to fourteen year-old girls and will have a strong celebrity focus.

BBC Magazines claims the 68-page title will cover everything from gritty investigative features to the latest celebrity news. It will also include features on relationship worries and up to the minute fashions.

Special preview issues of the title will be available from 7 October with the latest issue of Top Of The Pops and from 14 October with It’s Hot. The launch will also be supported by major in-store activity across key retailers in the UK.

Commenting on the launch, publisher, Alfie Lewis, said: “We set out to extend our teen portfolio with an intelligent read that doesn’t compromise on entertainment value, and I think we’ve got it spot on. Unlike some of the existing lifestyle titles out there, Dare has a very natural feel to it, and will ensure our line up remains unbeatable.”

BBC magazines is confident the new title will find a place in the increasingly crowded teenage magazine sector, which has been boosted by the recent launch of Emap’s celebrity focussed Sneak and the music orientated Popworld.

The latest ABC results for the six months to June 2003 show that the BBC’s Top Of The Pops Magazine saw circulation increase by 7.4% year on year to 252,410. Meanwhile, BBC stablemate It’s Hot recorded a circulation of 115,163.
