UK Cinema Adspend Beats Other Media

Cinema UK Cinema has experienced the highest advertising revenue growth for the first half of 2005 out of all traditional display media, enjoying a 7.9% increase year on year.

According to new figures from Nielsen Media Research, cinema adspend totalled £66 million in terms of revenue for the January to June period, with growth pushed predominantly by the Motor sector.

The Cinema Advertising Association reveals that Star Wars Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith was the top film in the first six months of the year, grossing £38.5 million and breaking the highest opening weekend record with £10.7 million.

All other display media experienced an average increase of 3.8% in revenue for the first half of 2005, with press achieving 2.4% growth and television 5%.

The top category for cinema adspend was shown to be Motors at £12 million, followed by Telecomms and Drink with £9.8 million and £9.1 million respectively.

Commenting on the findings, Debbie Chalet, president of the Cinema Advertising Association said: “The half yearly NMR results are encouraging for cinema advertising sales. The media market remains competitive and dynamic, yet the initiatives in cinema remain positive especially in the growing potential of sponsorship and promotions.”

She added: “With excellent films on the horizon for the remainder of the year, cinema will continue to strive to be an integral part of advertising campaigns, driving audiences as well as advertising opportunities.”

Warner Bros’ family film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is already shown to be leading the way in the latter half of 2005, grossing over £19 million in its first two weeks of release.

Further films expected to attract a wide audience include the movie debut of Wallace and Gromit, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and The Chronicles of Narnia – the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in November.

Last month saw several Hollywood blockbusters dominating the nation’s cinemas, as Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith secured a second month as the most popular film choice, despite pressure from Batman Begins, the fifth Batman film featuring a fourth new face behind the mask (see June Sees Blockbusters Dominate Cinema).
