The mobile phone will overtake the computer as the most commonly used device to go online from worldwide by 2013, according to a new Global Mobile Survey.

The report, from agency Initiative, estimates that there will be 1.82 billion internet-enabled phones in use by that date.

The findings are taken from interviews with 8,000 active smartphone users from Italy, Sweden, the UK, US, Australia, China, India and South Korea.

Sixty five percent of smartphone users use their device to go online daily for an average of 37 minutes, the report found, while 50% of smartphone users said they browse the mobile web while watching TV, listening to the radio, and travelling.

In addition, more than 80% of smartphone users worldwide have downloaded at least one app, with this figure rising to 100% in China.

Juniper Research recently predicted that global mobile app revenues will rise from just under $10 billion in 2009 to $32 billion in 2015.

Elsewhere, Screen Digest forecast that revenues from apps will double in the next four years, reaching €100 billion a year by the end of 2013.
