The Dark Knight Rises to the top

The Dark Knight Rises has had the biggest opening weekend of the year so far, claiming £14.4 million in box office revenue.

It raced to the top spot ahead of Avengers Assemble 3D, which banked £13.2 million when it opened in April.

The long-awaited final Batman film is able to boast the fourth biggest opening weekend of all time. The previous two Batman films, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight secured £4.4 million and £8.3 million respectively.

Skyfall, the latest Bond film with Daniel Craig, is likely to come close to The Dark Knight Rises‘ figure, after the Quantum Of Solace opened with £15.6 million in 2008

In the US, Warner Brothers announced a lower-than-expected box office figure of $160.9 million for The Dark Knight Rises.
