Shazam exceeds quarter billion users

Shazam has exceeded a quarter of a billion users worldwide.

The Shazam app, which allows consumers to access additional information or content around a TV show or ad via their smartphone, can now be used with all television programmes in the US.

The app can link to websites including IMDB, Wikipedia and official programme websites to provide cast lists, trivia and gossip relating to the show. It also offers a social media sharing functionality.

Andrew Fisher, Shazam CEO, said: “With more than a quarter of a billion people who have used Shazam worldwide, no other app has our scale when it comes to offering the opportunity to engage with the media that interests them the most, whether it’s music or television. And now, that experience is even better than before, enabling people in the US to engage with any show at any time.”

In the UK, the first Shazamable ads ran during the break of the Britain’s Got Talent final in May following an exclusive deal between ITV and Shazam. 50,000 viewers used the app to tag the Pepsi MAX and Cadbury ads in just 60 seconds of airtime.
