TV viewing round-up: July 2015

July saw a change of direction for funny man David Walliams, who starred in BBC One’s brand new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime alongside Jessica Raine.

Last seen on British television screens back in the 1980s on ITV, this incarnation of the crime-solving duo ended up as July’s most watched programme with nearly 8 million viewers.

Meanwhile, ITV continued its recent trend of using celebrities to front the channel’s factual programming.

This time around Joanna Lumley’s Trans-Siberian Adventure saw the former New Avengers star take a 5,777 mile journey through China, Mongolia and Russia (nice work if you can get it).

The first edition of the three-part series gave ITV a healthy rating of 4.5 million viewers.

The third grand slam tennis tournament of the year was held this month in the leafy surrounding of south west London as Wimbledon 2015 filled the BBC’s airwaves.

One of the stand-out matches saw Britain’s Heather Watson push world number one Serena Williams to the brink of an early exit in the third round, with 4.2 million viewers watching the Guernsey-born star bow out in three sets late into Saturday evening.

Elsewhere, a clinical performance by seven-times champion Roger Federer saw the Swiss player enjoy a straight sets triumph over home favourite Andy Murray, watched by an average audience of 4.3 million.

Sadly for Federer he was unable to maintain that level of performance in the men’s final. Reigning champion Novak Djokovic repeated last year’s triumph and beat him again in four sets, in front of 7.4 million tennis fans.

Saved from the television scrapheap, thanks to a joint production deal between BBC One and online retailer Amazon, Ripper Street returned for a third series this month.

Despite being available to watch on Amazon Prime Instant Video since November last year, the latest series debuted on free-to-air television with a decent audience of just under 5 million.

Other shows that did well this month include: Fake Or Fortune (5.2 million); Celebrity MasterChef (6.2 million); The Outcast (5.1 million) and Long Lost Family (4 million).
