Sky’s new set-top-box to mean big things for ad targeting

Almost two decades since its first set-top box came to market, Sky is on the cusp of launching its latest offering, dubbed SkyQ, with one broadcast expert suggesting a launch date is scheduled for next week.

Speaking at Media Playground on Wednesday, Graham Lovelace, director of Lovelace Consulting, said he believes that SkyQ – like the new EE set-top-box – will feature “multiple tuners” to allow content to be streamed to devices around the home and the ability to record a range of channels whilst others are being watched.

The current set-top-box only supports two tuners, and Lovelace sees no reason why the new generation box will not feature up to 10.

The new device will also support 4K and if effectively coupled with Sky’s new ad targeting capabilities, more relevant advertising could be beamed to specific devices, overhauling television’s current targeting capabilities.
