TV viewing round-up: June 2016

Football completely dominated June’s TV schedule, with both ITV and BBC One scoring healthy ratings for the Euro 2016 football tournament held in France.

At the top of the pile was England vs Iceland, which proved to be the nadir for Roy Hodgson’s side as the Viking underdogs dumped England out with a 2-1 victory.

Watched by an average audience of 11.4 million, the match saw ITV achieve its third best rating so far of 2016 – just behind two editions of Britain’s Got Talent.

England’s earlier group stage matches against Slovakia and Russia also attracted good ratings for the commercial broadcaster, despite both games failing to offer much in the way of entertainment.

The drab 0-0 Slovakia vs England match was watched by 10.3 million poor souls, while the slightly less turgid England vs Russia match – mostly due to the game actually featuring some goals – pulled in 9.7 million viewers.

Although ITV secured the top three positions in this month’s chart, BBC One had the highest number of Euro 2016 entries in the top 20 list with 10 matches.

The all British Wales vs N. Ireland clash attracted the best ratings for the channel – with an average audience of 8.9 million watching the Welsh secure a place in the quarter finals, thanks to Gareth McAuley’s own goal.

Looking at matches not involving the home nations, the best performing matches were: Belgium vs Italy (7.5 million); Switzerland vs France (7 million); Germany vs Ukraine (6.9 million); France vs Romania (6.7 million) and Portugal vs Iceland (6.7 million).
