The New European goes tabloid

Following in the footsteps of the Guardian, The New European has announced its move to a tabloid newspaper format.

Currently printed in a European-style Berliner format, the move will take effect from July 13.

The title will also change its publication date to Thursday and will be a bigger 64-page paper, printed by Archant in Norfolk. The price will stay the same across Europe.

“We’ve asked our subscribers and they’ve told us it’s not the size of the paper that matters but the fresh alternative to old established media,” said editor Matt Kelly.

The New European will be smaller in size, bigger in pages and every bit as brilliant as it is today. Plus, you won’t be knocking elbows with people on the bus or train when you read it.”

Earlier this week Guardian Media Group announced that it will be closing its Berliner printworks and presses in an ongoing effort to reduce costs, which will see the Guardian and Observer published in tabloid form from the beginning of 2018.
