AA hires strategic policy advisor ahead of Brexit

The Advertising Association (AA) has appointed Konrad Shek to the newly created role of strategic policy advisor.

In his new role, Shek will help the organisation meet the challenges of Brexit, as well as work on other key issues including international trade, data and e-privacy.

He will also have a key role in developing the AA’s position towards free movement of labour, ensuring there is continued access to talent from overseas who wish to work in the UK advertising industry, as well as looking forward to future international trade opportunities.

Shek previously worked at Jardine Matheson for 5 years in Shanghai where he was involved in government relations and policy analysis. Prior to this, he had a nine-year career as a diplomat with the FCO, serving in London, Taipei and Chongqing.

Shek also currently serves as a non-executive director at Sustenir, a Singaporean-based Series A funded vertical farming start-up.

“I’m excited to be joining the Advertising Association at this time of huge change for the UK and the industry,” said Shek.

“We are in a fortunate position that the UK is a global leader in advertising but we can’t take that for granted and Brexit is creating a huge paradigm shift. Ultimately, this means we need better preparation to respond to global trends that can impact our industry and its potential to create trade barriers.”

Stephen Woodford, chief executive, Advertising Association, commented: “Konrad brings a wealth of international trade and public policy experience, and is a great addition to the team, particularly as the UK tries to forge new trading relationships post-Brexit.”
