April newspaper ABCs: Another static month for the daily market

March was a reasonably static month for newspaper circulations, and April – overall – delivered a similar result.

The entire daily market, period-on-period, was up 0.1%, thanks to the Guardian, The Times, The Daily Mail, The Daily Mirror and The Sun, which all recorded small or modest gains.

However, it was the Daily Mail that recorded the largest growth – 1.1%, amounting to an extra 13,000 copies.

Of the titles that recorded declines between March and April, most were slight, with the Financial Times the worst hit with a -3.3% drop – explained by the business slow-down over Easter.

The picture over the year remains pretty dim, however, with all titles down. Overall, the market declined by -7.8% year-on-year.

The story was less rosy for the Sunday market, which saw its overall circulation continue in decline. The market was down only -0.8% PoP, but -9.5% YoY.

Sunday titles were down almost across the board, with only two newspapers able to record growth over the period – Sunday People (+3%) and the Sun on Sunday (+0.1%). Every title was down year-on-year.

Meanwhile, the Observer was down -2.5% over the month, the Sunday Telegraph was down -2.0% and the Mail on Sunday was down -0.9%.

The London Free Press was down – again, most likely due to the Easter break.

The Metro was static at 0.1%, while the Evening Standard (which has just announced editorial cuts) was down -2.2%. City A.M. took a mini-break from business and suffered a -0.4%.
