The Evening Standard names new commercial director

James White, formerly ESI Media’s chief trading officer, has been named as the new commercial director of the publisher’s newsbrand the Evening Standard, a newly created role.

White joined the Evening Standard in 2006 as agency sales executive. He was promoted to head of newspapers at ESI Media – which also publishes the Independent – in 2011, before becoming chief trading officer in 2014.

Previous to this, he worked at both The Scotsman and The Independent.

In his new role, effective immediately, White will be responsible for all revenue lines across the Evening Standard in both digital and print.

“I am delighted and very proud to be the new commercial director of the Evening Standard,” White said.

“I’m looking forward to working with the brilliant team here to ensure we continue to innovate, challenge and thrive in a dynamic media marketplace.”

White will report into Evening Standard CEO Mike Soutar, who added: “In a strong field of candidates James was outstanding. He is a respected and popular executive who has enduring relationships with our most important clients and agencies.

“The fact that he is an internal appointment speaks not just of his qualities as a candidate but also of the extraordinary talent and strength and depth of expertise we have at The Evening Standard.”
