Mediatel News editor David Pidgeon to depart

The editor of Mediatel News has announced his plans to step down after more than seven years running the platform.

David Pidgeon, who took on the role at the end of 2012, will depart on May 1. He is leaving to pursue a trip rock climbing throughout the Alps.

During Pidgeon’s tenure, Mediatel News - which has been published since the early 1990s - has been almost completely overhauled in terms of editorial content, design and scope. Today it has a formidable line-up of regular writers and serves over 27,000 readers each month.

More recently, Mediatel News has supplemented its editorial offering with more in-depth features, podcasts and industry profiles as the platform has attracted readers from all over the world. The platform has also become a sustainable commercial vehicle for its owner Mediatel Group – through increased advertising revenues, partner content and its role supporting Mediatel Events.

“I’m so proud of what such a small team has achieved over the last seven years,” Pidgeon said. “I really believe we punch above our weight as an online magazine and I have loved this job so much. But it’s time to try new challenges, and for me they currently sit outside of work.

“Thanks so much to all of my brilliant writers, contacts, industry friends and frenemies - and, of course, our loyal readers. They have all taught me so much and I’ve had such fun.”

Mediatel Group will announce plans for a new editor in due course.

Commenting on Pidgeon’s departure, Greg Grimmer, Mediatel Group CEO, said: "I’ve worked with David since his early days as editor - first when I was a columnist and relied on his trusty red pen to keep my prose grammatically correct and the right side of a legal notice, and latterly since I joined as CEO of the Group where his knowledge of the business and the wider media industry is unparalleled.

"He will be sorely missed by everyone here but I am sure on his return from his Alpine Odyssey we will find space for his words and wisdom as a contributor. I am actively seeking a talented replacement who will have big shoes to fill.”

Pidgeon said he would return to the industry next year in a freelance capacity.
