Consumer ABCs August 2021: News & Current Affairs

Following a new reporting process this year, both The Week and MoneyWeek have reported strong digital figures for the last six months, bolstering their overall combined total circulation.

The Dennis titles were strong performers in the News & Current Affairs sector for today’s Consumer ABC figures, released today.

The Week Junior had a strong result, with increases of nearly 3% period on period and 18% year on year to nearly 101,000 (combined average weekly print and digital circulation).

This performance perhaps reflects the current climate and need for child accessible news during the pandemic.

Nicola Gummer, Journey Activation Print Director at Wavemaker UK, told Mediatel News that publications giving specialist insight to areas that audiences are passionate about are doing well.

She explained: “This is highlighted in particular where children are in the household, parents of 8- to 14-year-olds turned to The Week Junior for home-schooling support.

“Redan Publishing, covering the pre-school and primary age group had successes across the board:  Sparkle World was up 24%, Peppa Pig Bag o Fun up 17% and Fun to Learn Friends up 44% – all showing the need to keep this age group entertained through the pandemic.”

Meanwhile, The Oldie, founded by Private Eye co-founder and former editor Richard Ingrams, also saw an increase compared to the previous period and same period last year – up 3.8% and 4.3% respectively to just over 49,000 (combined print and digital).

In a rare move in the current climate, a new title has been released in this category, The Week Junior Science and Nature, which had a strong start with a circulation of over 30,000.
