Spotify trials vertical music video feed similar to TikTok

Spotify has been testing a vertical video feed similar to TikTok in a beta version for iOS.

First noticed by TechCrunch, a new tab named Discover allows users to swipe up or down through a video feed of music videos.

Spotify listeners can like content through this tab and find more information about lyrics and the artists.

The Discover icon appears in between current tabs Home, Search and Library in the trial version.

This has been seen to build on the streaming platform’s Canvas format where moving short videos replaced static album art while playing music.

Instagram and YouTube have also been inspired by TikTok’s short-form video feed with their growing Reels and Shorts format, while Snapchat has a Discover tab showcasing curated editorial content.

Spotify runs on a subscription model where premium members gain ad-free content for a monthly fee.

When asked about the possibility of rolling this out for more users and advertising possibilities for this format, a Spotify spokesperson told Mediatel News: “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience and others serve only as an important learning. We don’t have any further news to share at this time.”
