Future Disney+ users plan to ditch Netflix

The upcoming launch of Disney+ is set to cause big waves in the UK on-demand streaming market, as 37% of Brits planning to subscribe to the Disney service expect to cancel other subscriptions.

According to a survey by AudienceProject of 6,000 people in the UK, Germany, US and the Nordics, 26% of Brits plan to subscribe to Disney+ when it launches in the UK in March next year.

Of those expecting to both subscribe to the platform and cancel other subscriptions, over three in 10 claimed Netflix will be the service they drop. Almost a quarter will ditch Amazon Prime, while 17% said Sky's Now TV.

“The entrance of Disney+ into the battleground of UK streaming services is set to radically change the state of play," said Rune Werliin, chief product officer at AudienceProject.

"Netflix’s reign could be in question, as thousands of UK consumers consider switching from its service to Disney+. By this time next year, we could be looking at a very different picture when it comes to digital TV subscriptions and usage.”

Netflix is currently the most popular streaming service in the UK, used by 75% of the country. BBC iPlayer follows at 60%, and Amazon Prime is used by 50%.

Meanwhile, Disney+ is expected to claim 101 million subscribers globally by 2025, growing faster than Netflix, Apple TV+ and Amazon.

However, the platform has experienced teething problems since launching this month in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Thousands of customers have reportedly had their accounts hacked and put up for sale on the dark web.
