Zoo In Football Frenzy With Euro Sponsorship Deals

Emap’s recently launched men’s lifestyle magazine Zoo has secured a number of high-profile sponsorship deals with Pepsi, Yates and Coral to coincide with the impending Euro 2004 football tournament.

The magazine will also be published on different days throughout the championships to bring readers news on the key England games. The first Zoo football special will hit the news-stands on Wednesday 16 June following England’s debut game against France and on-sale dates thereafter will vary according to each fixture.

The first of the commercial partnerships will see fizzy drinks manufacturer Pepsi sponsor a specially created Euro Z004 wallplanner, listing the key Euro 2004 fixtures and kick-off times. Yates bar chain will extend its ‘Girl of the Week’ campaign to discover the UK’s undiscovered female talent and Coral will offer a free £5 telebet for every Zoo reader.

Commenting on the deals, Zoo publisher, Dan Cotton, said: “Euro ZOO4 is our heartland and we can’t wait for it to kick-off. Zoo is all about football, girls and funny stuff and securing the support of Pepsi, Yates’s and Coral for Euro ZOO4 is a reflection of our commitment to delivering the best coverage possible of this huge football event.”

He added: “The line up of editorial, sponsorship packages, competitions and marketing support will create an enormous amount of added value to the magazine for Zoo readers, and provide further opportunities for our advertisers to reach them.”

Emap launched Zoo earlier this year with the backing of an extensive £8 million advertising campaign targeting its core readership of males aged between 16 and 30. However, IPC was quick to steal its rival’s thunder with the launch of its own weekly men’s magazine, Nuts, just weeks before (see Advertisers Get On Board As IPC Unleashes Nuts).

Back in March Emap announced that Zoo was performing well as it revealed that full-year revenues look set to rise by 9% with underlying group revenues expected to increase by 3% as the advertising market picks up (see Emap Revenues Rise 9% As Advertising Improves).
