It publishes three newsletters each week, serving 14,000+ subscribers.

Opportunity: Systems Engineer - Mediatel Limited

    Important to know

You will work in a varied and busy environment, using your Linux, Windows, AWS and network infrastructure skills to support our web-based B2B solutions and our internal technical services.

The role is a mixture of server and network administration coupled with a minor degree of staff desktop support (supporting our dedicated desktop support engineer).

You have excellent, proven troubleshooting skills and experience of supporting live business systems in an SME environment, where you must be capable of delivering on your own and as part of a small team.

You must have proven experience of working under pressure.

You will be part of the team's (paid) rota for evening and weekend 'on-call' (approx. one weekend and one week of weekday evenings each month), triaging/responding to a typically low level of automated alerts from our monitoring systems.

    The role

Via a busy helpdesk you will take a senior role responsible for the support, maintenance, and development of our external client facing product server environments and the internal IT structure, including a little bit of desktop support.

    • Be jointly responsible for maximising service uptime and maintaining best-practice security measures for our systems
    • Respond to live client-facing application system generated alerts
    • Deliver on planned IT projects
    • Respond to support tickets
    • Work with - and support - other TechOps team members

In addition to supporting the delivery of our websites, web apps, APIs and their databases (MySQL, SQL Server and PostgreSQL), delivered via nginx/php-fpm, Apache and docker, you will maintain and evolve our (largely AWS-based) technical infrastructure spanning Linux Ubuntu and Windows Server: including routers, firewalls and security solutions, backup infrastructure, DNS servers, domain controllers, telephony, mail servers, VPNs, system monitoring and internal application infrastructure (from Office 365 and Sage, to gitlab and Jira).

In addition to strong experience of our core technical infrastructure, the role will offer an opportunity to learn and develop skills in areas that are new to you.

    Key attributes

    • Quick learner
    • Confident Linux & Windows sysadmin and Network admin skills
    • Proven troubleshooting skills
    • Self-sufficient (you'll work as part of a team – but it's a small, busy team and so you need to also be confident working alone)
    • Approachable, communicative, collaborative/open/sharing, hard-working

    Experience & skills

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills essential
    • Ability to learn and work autonomously
    • 5+ years of Windows & Linux (ideally Ubuntu/Debian) build/deployment and sysadmin experience (including Apache or nginx/php-fpm and bash/PowerShell scripting skills)
    • 5+ years' experience supporting live B2B IT systems in an SME environment – troubleshooting and responding to system alerts for live client-facing systems
    • 5+ years' network infrastructure experience – maintenance and administration (and ideally planning/architecture)
    • Strong skills and experience of establishing/maintaining system security measures
    • Database administration (MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL)
    • Experience of staff desktop support (Windows 10/Linux), troubleshooting and responding to user requests.

In addition to the company-wide benefits this role is also entitled to paid overtime for weekend support rota.
